It was in the early twentieth century that the Postman mailbag, made entirely of leather, gradually replaced the old wooden box used to distribute mail. The quality of the leather combined with the ‘saddle stitch’ sewing ensured strength and resilience against time and weather. Even after the arrival of the modern linen and leather mailbag in the 1930s, many postmen preferred to keep their original bag.
The seductive part of these bags was their purpose. As all communication was done by mail, they carried many secret letters for professionals….and lovers. The Postman’s bag was not only strong but romantic.
Behind the 2014-2015 POSTES Collection, lies the incredible talent of the french designer: Claudine Sorel.
This signature bag is a creative reinvention of the traditional mailbag worn for more than 100 years by the French postal services.
Enamored by the bag’s origins, Claudine Sorel decided to give it a second life interpreting versions of the bag in elegant and luxurious materials and searching for craft men who could recapture the raw elements of the original bag: a top flap, two gussets divided by a zip compartment and a lock. Claudine Sorel's concept of the POSTES bag was to design a non-conventional, extremely feminine, practical, comfortable, cute and luxurious ‘POSTES’ bag around two criteria: "a very French design, 100% handcrafted in the USA, and in a very limited edition series."
The new POSTES collection is characterized by vibrant colors and a unique combination of leather materials, symbolizing a radical reinvention of the classic tradition.
The signature style is available in two sizes, a large "City" size (W 11 3/4“x H 6 1/2” x D 4 1/2”) and a "Mini" size (W 6 ½ “ x H 5 “ x D 2 ¼”). It is now 100% handmade in New York utilizing centuries of traditional leather artistry.
The color palette features sea green, sky blue, clay and amber hues, as well as vivid strokes of scarlet, night black, emerald green, yellow saffron. The initial collection offers these colors in alligator, fur, calfskin and lambskin.
The locks are designed by Claudine Sorel and made in Italy and New York City. All the hardware is manufactured in Italy and available in polished palladium, gold-plated or vintage brass.
One of the special features of POSTES large mailbag design is the unique way the wearer can adjust the strap length. “Bethesda Clips” elegantly located under the shoulder straps allow the wearer to adjust the chain to be worn on the shoulder or short on the arm.
The POSTES brand mark is visible in a subtle but dynamic way, retro embossed, adding a discreet signature to these gorgeous bags.
Claudine Sorel is on a continuous quest for beauty by innovating and choosing materials to perpetuate the POSTES Collection .
